Few things are more uncomfortable than dealing with a broken air conditioner on a hot summer day. The good news is, you may not need a full replacement—many AC issues have simple fixes once the problem is identified.

If your system isn’t blowing cold air and you’re stuck sweating through the heat, here are a few common reasons that could explain why your AC isn’t working properly.

Thermostat Set Incorrectly

A thermostat can be overlooked when troubleshooting air conditioning issues. If the temperature is set too high, or if the settings were accidentally switched to “fan only,” the system may circulate air without actually cooling it. Verifying the correct mode and temperature setting is a simple yet essential first step.

Clogged or Dirty Air Filter

A blocked air filter restricts airflow, leading to poor cooling performance and compromised indoor air quality. This buildup of dust and dirt can force the system to work harder, increasing energy use and reducing overall efficiency. Replacing or cleaning the air filter often resolves weak airflow and cooling issues.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Refrigerant is central for heat absorption in the cooling process. A leak or undercharged system can’t transfer heat effectively, which may result in the AC blowing warm air. Low refrigerant levels often point to a deeper issue, such as a cracked pipe or failed valve, and often require professional help to fix.

Faulty Compressor

The compressor is responsible for circulating refrigerant through the system. When it fails or starts to lose capacity, the cooling cycle breaks down, causing the unit to blow hot air. Compressor issues often stem from electrical problems, wear and tear, or a failed capacitor affecting power delivery.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

If you notice ice forming around the evaporator, restricted airflow or low refrigerant may be the culprit. Ice blocks heat absorption, leading to poor cooling and rising humidity. This often occurs when airflow is obstructed by furniture, dirt, or debris in the ducts or vents.

Dirty Condenser Coils

Located outside, the condenser coils release heat absorbed from inside the home. When these coils become coated in dirt or exposed to air pollution, their efficiency drops significantly. This can lead to the system blowing warm air and struggling with temperature regulation.

Electrical Problems

An air conditioner depends on proper electricity flow. A tripped circuit breaker, a worn wire, or a faulty switch can interrupt power to key components, including the fan or compressor. These electrical issues can make the unit stop cooling altogether or produce intermittent cooling.

Blocked or Leaky Ducts

Air escapes through leaks in the duct system, especially in areas like the attic or basement. A poorly sealed duct allows cool air to leak out before reaching living spaces, leaving some rooms uncomfortable. This not only reduces cooling but also impacts energy efficiency.

Malfunctioning Blower Motor

The blower motor drives the airflow across the evaporator and into your home. If this motor fails, the system may still run, but no air will be pushed out. This can feel like the AC is on, but nothing cold is coming through.

Clogged Drain Line

Condensation removed during the cooling process is expelled through a drain line. If this line clogs with mildew, dirt, or mold, moisture backs up into the system. The resulting excess moisture can affect performance and trigger safety switches that shut off the system.

Thermostat Sensor Issue

A faulty sensor can misread room temperature, causing the unit to cycle on and off at the wrong times. This sensor, usually near the evaporator, should be positioned correctly. Misalignment can confuse the system into believing the desired temperature has been reached.

Faulty Capacitor or Contactor

Capacitors provide the burst of electricity required to start the motors. If a capacitor fails, the compressor or fan motor may not run properly. Similarly, a malfunctioning contactor can prevent the system from initiating the cooling cycle, leaving the air conditioning unit idle.

Dirty or Obstructed Vents

Ventilation plays a vital role in distributing cooled air. When vents are blocked by furniture or clogged with dust and debris, rooms may remain warm. Inspecting and cleaning vents improves airflow and prevents cold spots or insufficient cooling.

Broken or Leaky Hose or Pipe

Hoses and pipes transport refrigerant and condensate. Any crack, leak, or blockage in these lines can cause refrigerant loss or water backup. Over time, these issues affect pressure and cooling capability, often requiring plumbing expertise for proper repair.

System Overload From Weather or Heat Load

Extreme weather or a sudden increase in indoor heat load can overwhelm your system. For example, opening windows, running multiple heat-generating appliances, or poor ceiling insulation can cause the AC to fall behind.

Neglected Maintenance

Regular maintenance identifies small issues before they escalate. Neglecting tune-ups leads to dirt accumulation, wear and tear, and parts failure. Routine inspection and cleaning of components like the heat exchanger, pump, and fan motor are essential for efficient operation.

Mold or Odor Issues

If there’s a musty odor, mold growth inside ducts or the evaporator is possible. High humidity and stagnant moisture foster mildew, which not only smells unpleasant but also affects indoor air quality. Addressing the source is key to restoring cleaner air.
